Monthly Editorial of New TV Pilots: Which Ones Make the Cut for My Watch List?

White cursive text "The Woman Writes" and "Monthly Editorial" in bold on a black background, creating an elegant, minimalist look.

Welcome Back, to April’s monthly editorial of new TV pilots, I hope you are well & safe. This month I was a bit slow & also I have reenergised my different watch trends that I have seen this month. So, hopefully in this editorial, I will showcase these trends. As I find this information interesting to look at. To a month to month based.

For the month, I watched more of YouTube videos of captivating topics about true crime and history that were good and well done. I did still watch a number of Asian drama pilot episodes. Which still gave the craving for non-English dramas a bit satisfied. But I did watch more normal TV shows.

Which is intriguing, as it's a big thing that happened this month.

Because I have been stricter on my watching of TV shows. As I had created this rule. Where I would only watch 1 season of each TV show, that I wanted to review, at a time. Because I like to do season - based reviews for The Woman Who Writes, as it gives me a chance to dive further into my crazy theories have, at the time.

April 2025 has been a rule breaking month.

The first pilot episode I liked in April is. The Way Home.

Now, when I watch Hallmark Style Dramas or Movies, I become a cringe commenter of when certain things should happen. (but this could be applied to every TV show and movies I consume.).

When I was watching this pilot episode. It did feel a bit like an extended hallmark movie opener. It does not mean it's a bad thing. I believe to be a solid choice for the show in general. However, it has the vibes of Netflix's Virgin River &  CTV's Sullivan's Crossing.

It has the element of coming of age and grief mixed into the show's overall plot and theme.

I think the writers will have more detail coming in the following episodes of the season. I did skip watched the episode. Because it was slow in those moments of the episode.

Overall, I'm interested in this one & I have started to watch the second episode of this series. & I look forward to seeing more of this series, when I get the time and the motivation to watch it.

Next pilot episode, we will be looking at Marvel’s Dare Devil.

I haven't seen the Marvel Universe that was created for Netflix. All those years ago. Like Jessica Jones, Daredevil, The Punisher, Luke Cage. With the Daredevil series reboot been released on Disney + a couple of months ago now.

Thought it might be time to check out the series of Daredevil show & how it started. Before checking out the pilot episode of the reboot series.

Well, the Brutality that the show has definitively lives up to the R rating. That was advertised all those years ago. Yes, I believe some stunt work is great. But the rest does feel clunky. Or it could be that I’m not used to the style of combat fighting.

But from a story standpoint. It’s a well-written pilot. As the writers gave a quick glimpse. Into what adventures that Matt Murdock and his team are going to get up to. They also did give a not bad explainer of how Matt got his condition & how it’s evolved to now. & how he used it to his advantage, solving crime & defending his victims.

At the end of the day, it’s a not bad superhero crime procedural. It's very similar to The CW’s Arrow. That came around the same time.

We leave the superhero world. We are going to walk into the world of an action - packed Surf Rescue Crew that is based in Hawaii. With an ABC (US)/ Ryan Murphy production.

I have seen every version of 9-1-1 Universe. From the original series to the 1st spin-off - 9-1-1 : Lone star.

When Rescue Hi - Surf. I was like no come on, seriously a budget Bay Watch that is based out of Hawaii.

While it’s not any other crime procedural like Hawaii Five -O and NCIS : Hawaii (honourable mention, Magnum P.I).

It feels like there is a change in the air, But I have been putting off this series for a while. Now this month I thought I would give it a chance to tackle it.

My First Impressions, is that this pilot is another formula version of 9-1-1 : Original. Now, I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. I think it could have a better written glimpse into the universe that the writers are creating.

Or it could be I skipped watched the episode. It just felt clunky and unwritten.

Probably the best things that happened in the episode was the cinema photography & the stunt team. I think they hold up the most of the episode.

Overall, this show has sparked my interset, might be because I’m an Australian who is a big fan of the beach. This show can be added to my slate of current TV shows. But because the way the pilot was written. This show will be placed on the back burner.

We have finally moved to the third pilot episode I watched this month. A medical drama, with CBS/Paramount+ Production called Watson.

Like most of the pilot episodes in this newsletter. They have been on my watch list for a while. This month, why not check it out.

First Impressions of Watson can be summed up in a few sentences. It’s a John Watson story that is based on the lore of Sherlock Holmes mixed with a house inspired medical drama that has a good actor can take on the role.

I enjoyed this pilot episode, as it gave a great glimpse into what the creators of the show want to build into their universe. Obviously, it must have been a good episode. As I didn't skip watch at all.

Overall, the origin story, is a not bad starting point. As it has good character & relationship development. Which I found to be interesting to watch.

I believe I have found a good TV show on Paramount +. I just hope to god that they don’t cancel the show. With the massive cancellations of diverse TV shows at CBS studios. That has been happening.

Even though I’m not going to be watching the series right now. But it’s a show that is going on my list of potential shows that I can come back to.

As we around up the end of the newsletter. The final pilot for the month of April we will be talking about is the English Version of High Potential that came out on Disney+ in the last few months.

High Potential has been on my new shows for 2025 watch list. As I felt my normal shows were boring this month, so it was pulled off the list and I checked it out.

The title card or the promotional [poster for the show High Potential

High Potential Episode 1 is not a bad pilot. and for me, it can be summed in a few sentences. A TV show that has elements of its pressor series. And from what I can gather, my Internet search. High Potential has been influenced and mixed by Sherlock Holmes, Bones. (in terms of character origin.). I believe that the main actor of the series is great for the series.

Overall, I enjoyed this pilot. It did have moments that felt clunky & cringe. Of course, I skipped watched. The creators of the English version of the show, did use elements of the source material.

I don’t know if they gave a good glimpse of the universe that they are creating.  it does have a good jumping off point for the character and relationship development.

I do believe I have stumbled onto a gem of a crime procedural on the ABC (US)/Disney+ network. As I have plenty of shows on my current slate. (like normal.). This show is going to have to go back to the list for now.

Rating of the pilot is 2.75/5 TV screens

Normally, I would have 5 favourite pilots per month. You can tell, I’m releasing this on second week of May 2025.

However, I did have some of the potential pilots I watched were. Just not worth talking about.

I would like to keep this editorial short. Or we will be here all day.

My trends for the month of April has been more focused on watching foreign dramas. I also finally been catching up on my updated list of my TV shows. This only because I have seen some spoilers on some stories that have happened in this TV season of 2025/2026.

Because I have been spending too much of my time on the fandom discords, Reddit and those pesky TV accounts that I follow on Bluesky.

Nevertheless, I do have a list in store of what I might watch in May 2025.

1. Your Friends & Neighbours.

2. Suits LA.

3. NCIS :Origins.

4. Ransom Canyon.

5. The Studio.

But anything can change over a course of a month, the list might change. Who knows?

One thing is for sure, I will still be watching TV.

Until next month,

This Has Been,

The Woman Who Writes.

& I will be back soon enough.
